911 and emergency calls

TogoDial cannot call 911

You cannot reach 911 or any other emergency number from TogoDial today. Dialling it from an extension will not connect to an emergency service. Keep a mobile phone or a landline available and use it for emergencies.

Why, and what that means for you

Emergency calling from an internet phone service needs the carrier to know the physical address of every line, so the call reaches the right dispatch centre and the operator knows where to send help. That is not set up on TogoDial yet, and we would rather tell you so than let anybody find out during an emergency.

Even once it exists, internet calling has limits a traditional line does not: it stops when the power or the broadband does, and it reports the address on file rather than where you actually are.

If you give extensions to a team, you are responsible for making sure they know that TogoDial cannot be used for emergency calls. Print this page, or send them the link.
